How To Maintain Your Beauty Regimen And Well-Being While Traveling
So you’re days away from your next adventure abroad. The room is booked, the flight is scheduled and your itinerary is complete.
But, out of nowhere looming questions pop into your head: “Will I be able to pack all of my makeup?”, “Will my travel destination sell my favorite curl cream?”, “Should I bring the entire jar of my favorite Shea Butter and does it fit the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule?”
Maintaining your beauty rituals away from home can be a major challenge, especially when an airport is involved. Based on my personal years of trial and error, here are five helpful tips I use to preserve my beauty and well-being that you can use to slay every photo on your next trip!
- Use TSA Approved Travel-Sized Containers
It’s not always the most sensible idea to throw large bottles of your favorite deep conditioner and body wash into a duffle bag. Travel-sized containers are perfect for transporting your favorite liquids and creams, and can last trips as long as two weeks. These containers are usually TSA friendly, (3.4 oz.) but always check the label before purchasing. Stores like Target have various types of travel-sized bottles that match a variety of products. These containers are super cheap and are reusable. For flights, I pack my personal care items in one of my carry-on bags in case my luggage is delayed when I reach my destination. Makeup already tends to be packaged in containers less than 3.4 oz, but make sure to check before packing. And if you are unsure of whether your favorite foundation or primer will pass TSA check, pack some of it in travel-sized containers. Better safe than sorry. - Make DIY Leak Proof Seals
It’s always frustrating when your liquids leak onto your expensive belongings. I’ve had countless situations where my shampoo completely soaked my favorite clothes and accessories, especially in my checked luggage. While nothing is 100% leak-proof, DIY sealing the lids of your products with plastic wrap or a small plastic bag can do the trick. Unscrew the lid of your container, place the bag over the container opening and screw the the lid back onto the container. This will keep your products in their containers and not all over your valuables! - Choose A Protective Hairstyle
Not to dictate anyone’s personal expression, but from my experience choosing a protective hairstyle style is the best option for travel. Braids, locs, cornrows and twists have never been easier to manage when sleeping for hours on an uncomfortable plane ride, sweating during a canyon hike or jet skiing in a turquoise ocean. Protective styles are easy to wash and daily maintenance is basically non-existent. Just grab a dollop of coconut oil for your scalp and you’re good to go! When it comes to Black hair care, traveling to your home-away-from-home can be challenging, especially if there are no Black hair salons or beauty supply stores to rescue you if your hair doesn’t cooperate. Protective styles are easy to do and look fabulous on just about anybody. You can change up your hair color and add accessories to match any style you choose! - Carry Hard-Shell Carry-On Suitcases
While this may not seem like a necessity, hard-shell carry-on suitcases have become a must have for me! These suitcases can fit various types of apparel, accessories and makeup without ever going over the approved carry-on size! I usually try to fit as many items as possible, but of course I can’t fit my entire wardrobe and bathroom counter, so I do my best to pack strategically. Hard shell carry-ons allow you to avoid baggage claim, reduce your baggage load, and are made to be airport, train and subway-chasing friendly! lol - Pack your Vitamins, Especially Vitamin C
Whether you’re traveling via plane, train, or even a car, it’s guaranteed that you’ll be sharing your living space with others, and your sleeping and eating patterns might also be affected as well. To stay healthy in unusual places, it’s very important to take a multivitamin and vitamin C supplements. There are plenty of vitamin C products made especially for travelers such as Emergen-C and Airborne. Taking vitamins and/or supplements can prevent you from becoming ill, which is the last thing you want while trying to live your best life abroad.
Preparing for a getaway can be very stressful because we all want to look and feel magnificent wherever we go. I always dread looking back at some of my photos from an awesome trip, and realize that I could have looked and felt better if I brought my favorite hair moisturizer, or realized that I could’ve saved money if I had only brought my carry-on suitcase. The more I travel, the more I realized how important it is to PREPARE no matter where the trip!
Hopefully my small practices can make a world of a difference for you on your next adventure!
